Special Event with Steven Godden and animation by Steve Bayard at the Kunstraum Berlin

For this special week before to enter the Christmas period of the year, you can tap into a darker side to admire the artworks of the young Australian illustrator and artist Steven Godden who's now been added to our e-Catalog.

Steven Godden, originally from Melbourne, Australia, is an emerging artist based since January 2019 in Berlin, Germany.

Steven Godden predominantly uses charcoal and soft pastel on paper to create monochromatic works inspired by surrealism, psychology, mythology and anatomy. Furthermore, Steven is an avid drawer creating graphite and ink illustrations, logos and tattoo designs.

Steven Godden is largely self taught with a years worth of tuition at a private art school in Melbourne. Steven has had a number of exhibitions and residencies since beginning his career in late 2017. Some of his work is currently held in private collections. Steven is associated with RawArtists, the Motley Bauhaus, Takt Berlin, Bayard Art Consulting, and a founding member of Collective 42.

"I seek, and contemplate upon, the deeper, darker, gloomier, more profound details of existence; bringing forth images and sensations of the dark reality within." - Steven Godden -

For this special art gathering, Steven Godden will present his latest works, Chaos I & Chaos II, Skeleton Heart, Heart Hands, Awakening, Advanced Anatomy.

"Chaos I and II" were the results of research and exploration during a residency with Takt Berlin in the winter of 2019. The "Chaos" series was created by letting the process and chaos take over Steven's artistic practice – instead of the preceding image and goal based practice. The underpinning research lies here in physics, fractals, Chaos Theory, Big Bang Theory and Greek mythology. These works are the first instalments of a greater artistic and philosophical project – Modern Mythology – that investigates the stories that underpin our existence and culture. It is an attempt to reinterpret older mythologies whilst incorporating more contemporary stories such as those of science.

"Awakening" is made as part of a series of the same name and as part of a residency with the Motley Bauhaus. This work was an image that Steven Godden continued to see when looking within during a period of absence from his artistic practice. The persistent image needed to be awakened and physically manifested. The internal image looks in all perspectives and all emotional states. A constant ability to see within.

" Heart Hands" is part of the greater series "Anatomy", "Heart Hands" plays with the idea of "Steven Godden heart is in your hands". The gripping feeling of love, held so tight, that the two concepts meld together.

"Skeleton Heart" is part of the series "Anatomy", "Skeleton Heart" reverses the idea that the heart is the centre of life within us. It plays with the simple idea of a dead heart – the death of feeling.

" Advanced Anatomy" is the centrepiece work for the "Anatomy" series. It references Da Vinci’s "Vitruvian Man" and similarly examines the physical, visual aspects of humanity. However, it takes this concept further and asks what humanity could look like – an ideal, heroically proportioned, evolved version.

"Untitled" (sold) is a standalone work concerned with the crushing loneliness of alienation and distance. However it is ultimately a work about hope. We all experience alienation and loneliness, and it is this shared human experience that can unite us across the void.
